DuPont Takes Action to Address HCFC Air Conditioning and Refrigerant Shortfall

Wilmington, Del. (Vocus) June 11, 2009 -- With the next deadline in the phaseout of hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), including HCFC-22 (R-22) refrigerants, looming by year-end, DuPont today announced an expansion of its reclaim and retrofit program for the air conditioning and refrigeration service aftermarket. The projected 27.5 million pound R-22 shortfall is a result from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed HCFC allocation rule that will go into effect Jan. 1, 2010.

Measures to conserve R-22 by increasing efforts to reclaim it or by retrofitting equipment with R 22 replacements like DuPont™ ISCEON (http://www2.dupont.com/Living_Tomorrow/en_BE/construction_offering/energy/isceon.html)® refrigerants are two critical ways business owners and facility managers can avoid potential negative financial impact to their operations. DuPont provides a reclaim program for its refrigerant distributors who participate as DuPont Authorized Reclaim Centers to collect and return recovered refrigerants. Recently, DuPont expanded and improved its reclaim offer to equip distributor reclaim centers with easy, flexible and convenient options for contractors and equipment owners to promote the return of recovered R 22. DuPont continues to offer leading retrofit solutions to replace R-22 in existing systems.

“With this new projection, it’s become increasingly clear that the industry will need to rely on the reuse of recovered and reclaimed R-22,” said Cynthia C. Green, vice president and general manager – DuPont Fluoroproducts. “Additionally, the actions we are taking now to retrofit equipment to HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) such as DuPont™ ISCEON® refrigerants puts our customers in a better position to avoid anticipated supply issues as the phaseout of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), including R-22 draws closer. Taking a longer term view, DuPont continues to use its science to lead the industry in the development of replacement products to address not only the issue of ozone depletion but also that of global climate change.”

DuPont™ ISCEON® refrigerants have saved supermarket chains up to $25,000 per retrofitted store - resulting in the lowest total cost of ownership of any R-22 alternative. ISCEON® refrigerants have been field tested and demonstrate up to 12 percent more energy savings than R-22 in low temperature equipment, and offer 32 percent lower global warming potential than R404A.
